Add a Loyal Family Member: April is Adopt-A-Greyhound Month

Illinois families come in all shapes and sizes. There is no single way to build a home filled with love, loyalty, and shared experiences. In fact, some of our most cherished family members walk on four legs, drink from a bowl, and sleep on the floor: our dogs.

Anyone who lives with a dog or grew up with one appreciates how important a role these beloved animals can play in our lives. They are often far more than pets, becoming companions that share in the ups and downs of life-providing loyalty through thick and thin.

Consider a Greyhound

As a dog lover and proud owner of two greyhounds, I would like to let local residents know that April is officially known as National Adopt-A-Greyhound Month. If you are considering adding a dog to your home, now is the perfect opportunity to take the plunge and discover how these animals can make wonderful companions.

The Greyhound Project provides a helpful list of adoption agencies in Illinois where former racing greyhounds are matched up with new homes to transition off the racetrack. There are many adoption operations located throughout suburban Chicago so that local families can find services nearby. My favorite reputable source for greyhound adoptions is Greyhounds Only through which I have adopted my most recent two greys, Millie and Sonny. Many of my friends have also adopted greyhounds through this organization, which will provide you with the knowledge and skills to help these lovable creatures make their transition from race dog to couch potato.

For those not familiar with the breed, greyhounds are best known for their speed and use in dog racing competitions. However, they are much more than just fast. Usually described as intelligent, gentle, and loyal, greyhounds make ideal long-term companions.

While they enjoy a good romp as much as the next dog, despite popular misconceptions, greyhounds are not hyperactive or in need of any more than regular exercise. No two dogs are identical (every animal has their own personality), but in general, greyhounds can live happily with other dogs, cats, and children. Greyhounds are also not known as "barkers." This is important for those living around neighbors, and it is a quality that makes greyhounds ideal pets in both the city and suburbs.
