Sesame Street Offers Help with Divorce

Sesame Street is not just puppets on TV. For over two decades they have offered family programming every weekend. As years have passed there have been many changes, such as the cookie monster snacking on vegetables. The newest addition is that Sesame Street is tackling the scary subject of divorce. Sesame Workshop has begun offering resources for families experiencing divorce.

The multimedia package is called "Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce." The program is aimed at kids between the ages of 2 and 8, but there are also materials for adults. The multimedia package includes testimonials from other kids, a story book about separate households and even an app for smart phones. All materials are available online at www.sesamestreet.org/divorce.

This marks the second foray into the topic of divorce for Sesame Street. The program was close to airing a segment about divorce in 1992. The segment starred Snuffleupagus and his parents. The wooly mammoth was trying to understand why his parents were splitting up and was upset about picking which cave to live in. The segment tested so poorly with small children that it was never actually aired.

Even now the divorce resources will only be available online and won't be shown on TV. "Our strategy is much more effective when we do a targeted initiative. When we're creating comething for TV, it's all for children. Those children who are not directly impacted [by divorce] start to wonder ‘Are my parents getting a divorce?'" said Jeanette Betancourt, vice president for outreach and educational practices at Sesame Workshop.
